It’s Great to Be Here!

As the semester starts to wind up, only five or so weeks left again I say: it really is great to be here. This school is a treasure.  You won’t fully grasp this until you’re here and after the flurry of classes, you stop and fully appreciate it.  It might sneak up on you if you drive home and look back seeing the school softly lit in the fading sunset. Whether you have good days, bad days, or both; something about that view in the evening makes it worth it.

“It’s great to be here,” said an English professor of mine everyday in class. I never forget it because he had a t-shirt for these landmark sayings.  The same moreover applies to VLS. The passion thriving here is contagious. Passion for academics, the community, the village and the beautiful nature surrounding us is something that will always make you pause in the moments when you feel most out of sync.  Then again:

“If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough.”

Mario Andretti

If law is your passion then you will fall in love here. There’s a coin assumption because of the small environment, you’ll have nothing else to do besides study, but it’s not true. You may love your classes, you might come here ready to meet your goals, but you’ll inevitably change your mind, open your eyes, view the world differently and recommit to everything that brought you here. It doesn’t matter if you live nearby or you live all the way in China, it all boils down into the bonds of friendship, scholarship and community.

This community, this school is a treasure. Remembering yesterday’s Veterans’ Day ceremony, looking towards the next few years, this phrase comes to mind: “I hope that at least in your eyes, I’ve earned what all of you have done for me.”- Saving Private Ryan.
